Analyzing the US global health strategy and budgets to identify gaps and recommendations.

The Global Health Council's work on U.S. global health policy and budget priorities:
  • Analyzing budgets, trends and policies for policymakers and the global health community;

  • Convening the global health community at the Appropriations Roundtable to develop consistent and compelling messages to promote sustained funding; and

  • Producing publications that focus on policy-research-practice gaps and resource flows.

Framework for U.S. Global Health Policy: The U.S. Global Health Initiative (GHI)

On May 5, 2009, President Barack Obama announced the six-year, $63 billion Global Health Initiative, which calls for the U.S. to develop an integrated and comprehensive global health strategy that moves away from the fragmented and disease-specific approach of the past. The GHI – which began in Fiscal Year 2009 and will go through Fiscal Year 2014 - is meant to maintain the U.S. government's commitment to fighting HIV/AIDS and malaria, while scaling up programs in maternal and child health, family planning and neglected tropical diseases.

The GHI responds to the top global health priority of the Global Health Council and our members.

Budget and Policy Advisory Group

This group's activities have been suspended.

This new cross-cutting budget and policy group will focus on all appropriations, policy (both global and U.S.), and policy communications activities related to global health generally.

This group will have several sub-working groups focused exclusively on appropriations, legislation and communications, but these groups will only meet if deemed necessary by the Advisory Group. If there are no pressing needs, appropriations, policy/legislation, and policy communications issues and activities will be discussed during the monthly standing meeting of the Budget and Policy Advisory Group.

In addition, the group will have time-limited task forces to address certain pieces of legislation or emerging issue areas. The formation of task forces will be determined by the Advisory Group.

This group’s listserv has replaced the old “Appropriations Working Group” listserv. For everyone who was already a member of that listserv, you are automatically on the new Budget and Policy listserv.

Only Global Health Council member organizations may participate.
