What is the New Investigators in Global Health (NIGH) Program?
The NIGH program is a competitive abstract submission and selection program designed to highlight exemplary research, policy and advocacy initiatives of new and future leaders in global health, and empower participants with global health advocacy skills. The program also provides the selected participants with the opportunity to make a presentation at a major international conference.

This year we are seeking to get a full representation of abstracts from across all disciplines.

The program culminates in the selected presenters attending and participating in a full week of activities at the Council’s Annual International Conference on Global Health, May 26-30, 2009 in Washington, DC. Winners will participate in either the NIGH panel or the general poster session, and will attend career development sessions, a special networking reception, the Council’s Annual Awards Banquet and advocacy skills training led by leading global health advocates.

Selected abstracts will be published in the final conference program and on the Council’s website.

For more information on the NIGH program, please click here: more information on NIGH.

What is a Preformed Panel?
A preformed panel is a suggested panel configuration that has been organized by three or four different organizations whose presentations would go well together. It includes a moderator who is familiar or involved with the programs and research addressed by the panel. It also includes a contact person who takes a lead in putting together the suggested panel and making sure that all the materials are submitted correctly and on time. This contact person serves as the primary liaison to the Council. Click below for Guidelines for Preformed Panel Submission:

Presenters are extended a reduced registration rate of $400 ($170 students). Nationals from community-based organizations in low- or middle-income countries qualify for a $150 registration rate. If my abstract is accepted, can I send a substitute presenter?
The Council discourages the use of substitutes. By submitting an abstract for consideration, you are implicitly agreeing that you will be able to register and attend Conference from May 26-30, 2009. That being said, we understand that emergencies may arise. An acceptable substitution is a co-author of the abstract or the study/program director. The substitute may not already be making a presentation in another session. A request for a presenter substitution must be made in writing with the Conference Program Coordinator.

Do you offer scholarships to attend the Conference?
We do normally have a small amount of scholarship funding available to help defray the cost of attending the conference. We reserve this limited funding, however, for presenters from developing countries working for community-based organizations who did not receive a scholarship within the past year.

How do I apply for a scholarship?
If you are a presenter from a developing country working for a community-based organization who did not receive a scholarship for the 2008 Conference, you will receive an invitation to apply for a scholarship shortly after being notified of your abstract’s selection. We will assess the amount of support available to us and make decisions based on our funding priorities.

Can you offer me a discount/complimentary registration?
We can only offer complimentary registration to our scholarship recipients, but several discounted registration categories are available. By registering for Conference early with our early rate, you will save a substantial amount of money over the regular rate. Professional and Student members of the Council receive a discounted rate, as do students and healthcare workers from community-based organizations in developing countries. Special group rates are also available, and individuals selected for our volunteer program receive a special rate.
