Responsibilities/Duties
Title: Staff Accountant
Supervisor: Finance Director
Department/Program: Finance
Employment Status: Full-time Exempt
Location: Washington, D.C.
The Staff Accountant is responsible for supporting and assisting the Finance Manager in all aspects of the financial operations. Job responsibilities include, but are not limited to: Account reconciliation, reporting, data entry and processing, vendor/customer relations and clerical and filing functions. The position will be responsible for maintaining data and information requirements in the Finance Department primarily through the use of the computerized accounting systems and the organizations filing systems. This position will work closely with the Finance Manager.
- Accounting:
- Review general ledger accounts and reconcile sub-ledgers to general ledger account balances as agreed upon.
- Prepare adjusting journal entries as appropriate based on reconciliations and reclassifications for submission to the Finance Manager for approval.
- Prepare daily and monthly accounting detail for Cash Receipts and payroll journal entries for submission to the Finance Manager for approval.
- Prepare miscellaneous adjusting bank entries with documentation as needed for submission to the Finance Manager for approval.
- Assist in making sure monthly accounting closeouts are completed in a timely manner.
- Review account coding and documentation in the Anybill system for the VT office, and serve as backup to the Office Manager in the DC office in the same function.
- Act as a liaison between the Finance Department and other departments on payments through the Anybill system to ensure an efficient and accurate flow of information, handling all staff inquiries.
- Provide basic training and support regarding rules, requirements and documentation for staff expenditures in accordance with Global Health Council policies, practices, and audit requirements.
- Assist in preparation for the annual audit as agreed upon.
- Administer and maintain existing American Express Corporate Credit Cards held by company cardholders.
- Prepare and issue weekly Flash report.
- Prepare spreadsheets for bi-monthly 401(k) plan contributions, and submit for approval to Finance Manager.
- Assist in training staff in the budget process and software as agreed upon.
- Prepare ad hoc analysis as agreed upon.
- Assist with initial internal control evaluations.
- Maintain and reconcile fixed asset register.
- Provide daily cash management tasks.
- Assist with review of monthly financial reports.
- Prepare written documentation for all processes and procedures encompassed within these essential duties.
- Reporting:
- Prepare daily/weekly/monthly/quarterly reports as agreed upon.
- Prepare specialized accounting reports for audit requirements and internal financial planning as agreed upon.
- Distribution of Monthly Financial reports to Directors and Managers.
- General Fiscal Responsibilities:
- Assist in the development of the organizations accounting and financial management procedures and policy.
- Other Duties:
- Attend all staff and strategic meetings, staff retreats and the Global Health Council’s annual conference, during which time duties will be modified and may include task that require lifting up to 30 pounds.
- Participate in cross-departmental teams and assume the responsibilities agreed upon.
- Some travel may be required between DC & VT offices and for attendance at external GHC functions.
- Accurately articulate the mission, visions and values of the Global Health Council.
Supervision: No supervisory responsibilities.

Qualifications/Requirements
Job Standards and Accountability:
Confidentiality is essential concerning all areas of the Finance Department. A breach of confidentiality will be considered gross misconduct. Employee must be able to prioritize work to complete all assignments on a timely basis. Attention to detail is essential for completing work accurately. Ability to deal with a wide range of individuals/personalities and competing priorities requires strong interpersonal skills. Employee must be able to handle interruptions with a minimum loss of concentration/time. Personal interruptions should be kept to a minimum, and confined to breaks except in emergency situations. Communicating directly with all levels of the organization and being a team player is essential.
- Bachelor’s Degree in accounting, finance or similar discipline required.
- Minimum of 3 years of accounting experience.
- Minimum of 3 years of non-profit accounting experience desired.
- Knowledge of computerized accounting systems required; familiarity with Great Plains financial management software desirable.
- Initiative, superior organization ability, with attention to detail essential.
- Good negotiating skills, discretion and judgment in dealing with counterparts in and outside the Council on confidential matters, and ability to execute duties efficiently required.
- Excellent Excel spreadsheet skills and competence in Microsoft office products, including e-mail, word processing, and database applications.
- Flexibility to assume a varying workload, sometimes under pressure.
- Proven ability to manage multiple tasks concurrently with excellent time management and reporting skills.
- Excellent interpersonal skills and demonstrated ability to interact professionally with diverse staff, members, and consultants. Works well in a team-oriented environment.
