World Malaria Day 2009: New Tools in the Fight against Malaria
April 8, 2009
Thurs., April 23, 2009
The U.S. Capitol Visitor Center
Washington, D.C.
The global health community has made great strides in combating malaria in recent years. However, malaria continues to claim the lives of close to 1 million children a year, mostly in sub-Saharan Africa, and sickens millions more. To achieve the long-term goal of eradicating malaria, we must continue the scale-up of existing anti-malaria strategies and increase investments in new tools to fight the disease. Not only do we need new donors and resources, we also need more scientists to invest their political and intellectual capital.
The Foundation for Innovative New Diagnostics (FIND), the Global Health Council, Medicines for Malaria Venture (MMV), and PATH Malaria Vaccine Initiative (MVI) held a luncheon briefing in honor of World Malaria Day 2009 to discuss exciting advances in malaria diagnostics, treatment and vaccine development.
