Council CEO Sturchio Presents Findings of Philanthropy and the Global Public Health Agenda Meeting to UN Economic and Social Council
July 6, 2009
On opening day of the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) 2009 High-Level Segment, Jeffrey L. Sturchio, president and CEO of the Global Health Council, delivered the final report of the UN Special Event on Philanthropy and the Global Public Health Agenda in New York on Feb. 23, 2009.
"More than 500 representatives from the private sector, philanthropic institutions, NGOs and academe participated in discussions with Member States and experts from the United Nations system on how to improve health outcomes for women and girls and how to raise awareness of the opportunities to prevent and treat neglected tropical diseases," Sturchio said.
UN Secretary-General Ban ki-Moon stressed the importance of improving women's health at the event in New York by saying, "Women are engines of development and drivers of improved health. Maternal health is a critical component of the well-being of any society." Yet the least progress of all of the Millennium Development Goals has been made in improving women’s health, Sturchio said.
Concerning neglected tropical diseases (NTDs), Sturchio referred to the report which states, "Controlling NTDs is an untapped development opportunity to alleviate poverty in the world's poorest populations, based on the availability of effective, low-cost tools - such as safe donated drugs, proven control strategies, a high return on investment and a solid track record of success."
