Health as a Bridge to Peace

Wednesday, 30 January 2002
12 noon - 2 pm
Room SC-5 in the Capitol Building
Lunch will be provided

The purpose of this Congressional briefing was to hear about health programs in Central America, Sudan, and Bosnia that have been used to foster international peace and security.

Every day, in some part of the world, political and military conflicts are taking place. In most cases, world leaders work together to address the humanitarian disasters that occur as a result of the conflict. Through this experience, we have learned that humanitarian solutions can be used to help build and keep peace in war-torn regions of the world.

For example, in 1985, the United Nations Children's Fund, the Pan American Health Organization and other partners worked with warring forces to organize three days of tranquility. During these "Days of Tranquility," over 400,000 children were immunized. Since then, "Days of Tranquility" have been coordinated in several countries including Afghanistan, Angola, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Lebanon, Nicaragua, Sierra Leone and the Sudan. These short-term initiatives can be used as a "Bridge for Peace."
