Rebuilding Afghanistan's Health System: What Next?
Wednesday, December 11, 2002
9:00 am - 10:30 am
U.S. Capitol Building, Room HC-5
Breakfast provided
The Afghanistan Ministry of Public Health is laying the foundation for access to basic health care for the people of Afghanistan, especially for women and children.
Throughout the summer and fall, the Ministry led an unprecedented national survey of available health infrastructure in Afghanistan, initiated by the US Agency for International Development and further supported by the European Commission, UNFPA, and Japan.
The results of the survey are helping the Ministry and donors to effectively plan and allocate resources for reconstructing the health sector.
The political changes, the commitment of Afghans to support the reconstruction of Afghanistan, and the present support of the international community create a unique opportunity to rehabilitate and reform the health system in the country.
This Congressional briefing focused on the current state of health in Afghanistan, stories from the field, and prospects for improving the health of men, women and children in Afghanistan.
