William H. Foege, MD, MPH is the Chair of the Global Health Council Board of Directors. Dr. Foege is a fellow at the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and a Professor Emeritus in the Department of International Health at Emory University's Rollins School of Public Health. He is an epidemiologist who worked in the successful campaign to eradicate smallpox in the 1970s and served as director of the U.S. Centers for Disease Control. Dr. Foege has also served as the executive director of The Carter Center. He received his BA from Pacific Lutheran University, his MD from the University of Washington Medical School and his MPH from Harvard University.
Robert A. Kapp, PhD is president of The US-China Business Council, the principal organization of American companies engaged in trade and investment with China. Dr. Kapp contributes regularly to informed U.S. dialogue on China, through Congressional testimony, published articles, media appearances, and presentations to educational and community organizations nationwide. He is the former president of the Washington Council on International Trade (1987-94), and a member of the Council on Foreign Relations, the National Committee on U.S.-China Relations, and the U.S. Department of State Advisory Committee on International Economic Policy.
Ann Marie Kimball, MD, MPH, FACPM is Professor of Epidemiology and Health Services at the University of Washington School of Public Health and Community Medicine. She is an adjunct professor in Medicine with the School of Medicine. She serves as Director of the APEC Emerging Infections Network and as an attending physician at Harborview Medical Center in Seattle. She is a New Century Scholar with the Fulbright Commission. Her research interests are in Emerging Infections and global epidemic, prevention, surveillance, investigation and control of infectious diseases. Specifically she has worked extensively in the areas of Trade policy and disease control, and telecommunications and disease surveillance and alert systems.
The purpose of this forum is to:
- Gain an understanding of the impact of infectious diseases on the health and economy of Washington State.
- Learn how globalized trade, travel and tourism are contributing to the spread of infectious diseases, including SARS.
- Learn how the recent SARS outbreak has impacted the economy of China and its potential long-term impact on the U.S. economy.
