International Health Electives in Cuba

When: Summer 2004, Spring 2005

Where: Cuba


Medical Education Cooperation with Cuba (MEDICC) offers elective experiences in Cuba for students in the health sciences working towards academic degrees in the United States and Canada. Electives may be from four to eight weeks, including coursework and clinical rotations at Cuban medical facilities where students are individually mentored by Cuban physicians.

In Cuba, MEDICC electives are coordinated with eight medical schools and the National School of Public Health.

Medical Education Cooperation with Cuba (MEDICC) is accepting applications for Summer 2004 and Spring 2005. Medical,Nursing and Public Health students from accredited universities may apply.

Applicants must be proficient in Spanish. Students observe first hand the merging of clinical practice and public health in Cuba's unique national health-care system. Curriculum in Cuba includes seminars,discussion, site visits, and rotation in community health clinics with a primary care doctor-nurse team.


Summer 2004 (open to medical students, nursing and public health students).
June 6-July 3--Women's Health Elective
June 13-July 10--Public Health Elective
June 20-July 17--Community Nursing Elective
June 27-July 24--Medical Students Summer Elective
(Priority given to first year students)


Spring 2005 (Priority given to 3rd. and 4th. year medical students).
February 13-March 12--Primary Care Elective
February 20-March 19--Primary Care with focus on CAM
February 27-March 26--Primary Care Elective

Over 800 students have participated in MEDICC academic programs since 1998. MEDICC is authorized by the US Treasury Department to provide educational programs in Cuba. Our offices are in the Nell Hodgson WoodruffSchool of Nursing at Emory University. The school is a strong programmatic partner with MEDICC, which maintains its status as an independent, non-profit organization.
