Tsunami Region to Receive Oral Rehydration Solution
25 January 2005
Cera Products Press Release
What
Thanks to private donations made through the Child Health Foundation, Cera Products is shipping eight tons of CeraLyte ORS, the Company's life-saving medical drink to Southeast Asia disaster victims afflicted with dangerous dehydrating diarrheal illnesses. Cera Products is providing CeraLyte at cost to the Child Health Foundation for this vital effort. In addition, Cera Products and Cumberland Pharmaceuticals, which distributes CeraLyte commercially in the U.S., are donating another 200 cases of CeraLyte to the American Red Cross for the Tsunami region. Red Cross officials are worried about outbreaks of "waterborne infections, diarrhea diseases, malaria and, possibly down the track, cholera."
Shipping is being donated to Direct Relief International and MAP International to get the ORS supplies, which leave from Cera's Nashville warehouse, to the relief areas. Yellow Freight is donating 66% of its costs for the US shipping from Nashville to California and Federal Express is providing shipping for Direct Relief International and Map International to get the product from the USA to the Tsunami relief areas.
Cera Products has committed more than $1 million of CeraLyte ORS at cost to the Child Health Foundation. Donations of $500,000 are needed to enable the entire stock to go to the disaster-stricken region. These supplies (400,000 liters of both CeraLyte ready-to-drink and powdered packets) could save 400,000 lives. Another shipment is expected to go to the area in February.

Diarrheal diseases can be fatal due to rapid depletion of body fluids and electrolytes. A healthy adult can die from cholera within eight hours; a weakened child can die in two hours. Just one liter of CeraLyte can save a life! CeraLyte restores essential electrolytes and fluid losses as it hydrates and is proven more effective for cholera patients than sugar-based ORS. Cera Products, established in 1993, scientifically developed its high performance medical and sports products along with world health experts; its products are based on research by Johns Hopkins physicians, who have worked along with Ms. Riikonen, at the International Centre for Diarrheal Disease in Bangladesh, which won the Bill Gates Award for global health three years ago.
Child Health Foundation, a 501(c)3 public charity, dedicated to saving the greatest number of child lives at lowest possible cost, was established in 1985 in Washington, D.C. by a group of international health experts, including United Nations staff and others connected to the ICDDRB.
