Global Health Council Lauds Frist's Testimony Before Commerce Committee on Tsunami Disaster Relief Efforts
Global Health Corps to strengthen readiness and response capabilities around the world called promising new initiative by leading health care professionals
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Global Health Council President and CEO Dr. Nils Daulaire applauded U.S. Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist's (R-TN) remarks today at a Commerce Committee hearing on tsunami relief efforts.
"Senator Frist's proposal to create a Global Health Corps and focus on providing clean water offers a long-term solution that could save millions of lives in the developing world," he said. "This initiative brings to light the need to address critical global health issues that are too often ignored and will ensure the active engagement of US health professionals around the world."
According to Sen. Frist, the Global Health Corps would function as a new ‘Peace Corps' and draw together medical professionals and other volunteers from around the nation to provide quick assistance when disaster strikes as well as ongoing care in the neediest parts of the developing world. During his testimony, Frist also called for clean water to become a major priority in US development programs and stated the need to encourage private companies to help with water projects around the world.
"We need to have systems and capable staff in place before disaster strikes and Sen. Frist's initiative represents an important step in this direction," said Daulaire.
