2005 Award For Safe Motherhood Champions
Greetings.
We hope that everyone is doing well. The beginning of 2005 has been marked by the terrible tsunami and earthquake tragedy in Asia. An unknown number of pregnant women and midwives have been killed, hospitals and health centers destroyed and ordinary people have done extraordinary deeds in extraordinary circumstances. According to a recent news story, "the Indonesian Midwives Association says that 30 percent – or some 1,650 – of its members living on the northern tip of Sumatra island died in the catastrophe. Many who survived are too traumatized to resume or work or lack equipment to safely deliver babies".
We know that many of our members have been affected by this tragedy, and our condolences are with you all. It will take long term relief work to help the many families, communities, and countries affected to rebuild their lives, homes, medical facilities, and other services. We have read and heard of the many heroic efforts from individuals and organizations working on the ground.
In acknowledgement of the tsunami and earthquake tragedy, the Global Health Council and the White Ribbon Alliance for Safe Motherhood Global Secretariat want to acknowledge and honor these individuals, local non-governmental organizations and international organizations. This year in lieu of the annual White Ribbon Contest, we are asking for the nominations of an individual or organization that has provided assistance to pregnant women and newborns - during and after this disaster. Together we plan to honor this individual or organization with the 2005 Award for Safe Motherhood Champions in the Tsunami-affected Region. The award and a small monetary donation will be presented during the closing plenary of the Global Health Council’s annual conference in May 2005. More specific details are below.
Many women have delivered during this difficult time and the lives of these women and newborns should continue to be protected and secured. We ask our members to join together to honor the champions working to ensure that mothers and newborns are not forgotten.
