U.S. Government support for child survival has, over the years, enabled dramatic reductions in child deaths in the developing world. Despite these impressive gains, nearly 11 million children still die each year before they reach their fifth birthday. Tragically, most of these deaths are preventable.
While the global community has renewed its commitment to child survival issues, U.S. government support earmarked for child and maternal health has been virtually stagnant, and the Administration has proposed a $19 million reduction in FY 06.
This in-depth discussion focused on the current challenges and opportunities to improving child survival advocacy in the U.S. and how the U.S. Coalition for Child Survival can best work to achieve progress. By working together, we believe that our voices will have a greater impact on our efforts to improve the health and survival of millions of children.
