AIDS to Kill 1 in 5 Southern Africa Farmers
14 April 2005
By Peter Apps
DURBAN, South Africa (Reuters) - AIDS will kill 20 percent of southern Africa's agricultural workers by 2020, researchers said on Thursday, possibly threatening food production in a region already facing frequent shortages.
But with massive unemployment across the continent, loss of earning power after families lose their adult breadwinners could be more of a problem than a lack of labor, they say.
...But in the region's largest food producer, South Africa, farmers say they have already lost 20 percent of their workforce in the last five years alone, but production is unaffected and they now expect the largest staple maize crop in a decade.

Ethiopian Death Toll from AIDS may Double in Three Years
13 April 2005
Agence France Presse
ADDIS ABABA (AFP) - Ethiopia's AIDS death toll may double to 1.8 million in three years unless steps are taken to reduce current infection rates and care for those already taken ill, according to a US study.
"The total population lost to AIDS was about 900,000 in 2003 and is projected to reach 1.8 million by 2008 if the present trends continue," it said, describing a dire situation in the impoverished Horn of Africa nation.
The disease is now responsible for about a third of all adult deaths in Ethiopia and will devastate the economy if left unchecked, said the study, conducted under the auspices of US President George W. Bush's Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief.
