Africa Malaria Day 2006: Innovations, Strategies & Opportunities
More Policy Series Events >
April 25 is Africa Malaria Day. On this day, communities around the world collectively focus on Africa, the continent that bears the brunt of the global malaria burden.
Tuesday, April 25, 2006
3-4:30 pm
The Capitol Building
Room HC-5
Washington, D.C.
Recent progress in the fight against malaria in the last few years offers great promise. After many years of debate there is increasing agreement about what works to prevent, diagnosis and treat the disease. Resources to fight malaria have grown considerably, with the latest investment being $1.2 billion over five years through the President's Malaria Initiative. The world has recognized the toll that malaria takes on the developing world and is poised to respond. New spokespersons from the developing world and donor countries have begun to relay key messages. Corporations and multilaterals are working together to bridge the supply gap of essential prevention tools and treatments. Afflicted countries are paving the way for widespread repeals of barriers to prevention and treatment including taxes on bed nets and user fees for malaria services. Together, these efforts suggest the opportunity to significantly reduce malaria's effect.
Over 80 people joined us to hear from three leaders working together towards a comprehensive response to the global burden of malaria and recognize Africa Malaria Day. Panelists for the event included:
