Rwanda: Rwanda-U.S. Malaria Initiative Launched

A five-year United States malaria initiative in Rwanda was recently launched in Byimana Sector, Ruhango District. President Bush' Malaria Initiative (PMI) is part of US government's initiative to eradicate malaria in 15 countries in Africa including Rwanda.

The global programme to reduce malaria-related deaths by 50% is budgeted at $1.2 billion and Rwanda will receive USD17million in 2007 under the theme: 'Fighting malaria, saving lives'.

Speaking at the launch the State Minister in-charge of HIV/Aids and other Epidemics Dr. Innocent Nyaruhirira appreciated the US government's support to the health sector and urged Rwandans to be diligent in fighting malaria through health education and promoting government health programmes.
