A Coup That Could Turn the Tide on AIDS

Over the last decade, South Africa's government has been less than assertive in combating its AIDS epidemic.

But the sometimes-comic, often-tragic soap opera that has been the country's response to the problem has taken a spectacular and positive twist: a coup.

With internationally pilloried Health Minister Manto Tshabalala-Msimang on sick leave and out of the office--she hasn't elaborated on the reason for her extended absence--her fed-up underlings and the country's vice president have taken over, apparently with the president's support
