The Global Health Council and the African Union held a briefing and reception commemorating the International Day of the African Child. This day is recognized throughout the world as an opportunity to reflect on progress toward health, education, equality and protection for all the continent’s children. Two thirds of both neonatal and young child deaths – more than 6 million every year – are from preventable and treatable causes such as pneumonia and malaria. Speakers addressed accomplishments and gaps in general health, nutrition, education and child trafficking – all areas that contribute to the well being of Africa’s children.

The briefing was directly followed by a reception to present the Honorable Betty McCollum (D-MN) with the second annual Congressional Award for Global Health. Award presented by The Honorable Amina Salum Ali, Ambassador, Permanent Representative of the African Union.
