World TB Day 2008
March 5, 2008
March 13, 2008
Dirksen Senate Office Building
Washington, D.C.
Congressional Briefing
Tuberculosis knows no borders. Taking more than 1.6 million lives each year, TB is the leading infectious disease killing people with HIV/AIDS, particularly in sub-Saharan Africa. And, as a recent World Health Organization report makes clear, drug-resistant TB is a growing threat around the world, with more than 45 countries (including the United States) reporting extensively drug-resistant (XDR) TB – a number that is certain to increase.
The Global Health Council, the Aeras Global TB Vaccine Foundation, and the American Thoracic Society held a briefing on Thurs., March 13, 2008 for an update on HIV-TB co-infection; drug-resistant TB; and research under way in Africa and Asia to develop new and effective vaccines.
Featured Speakers:
- Thomas A. Kenyon, Principal Deputy, Office of the Global AIDS Coordinator
- Sylvie Kwedi, Deputy Director of Clinical Operations, Aeras Global TB Vaccine Foundation
- Payam Nahid, MD, Assistant Professor of Medicine, Division of Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine, University of California, San Francisco
