Soot the Dark Horse in Global Warming

March 25, 2008

Emissions of soot into atmosphere could be the second biggest contributor to global warming behind carbon dioxide, according to a study by scientists from the Scripps Institute of Oceanography and the University of Iowa.

The study concludes that cutting soot emissions from indoor cooking and heating, largely from in the developing-world households burning coal, wood and other biomass, offers an opportunity for a rapid contribution to reducing global warming.

The focus of global warming mitigation to date has been on the six identified greenhouse gases with little hard data to quantify the warming impact of particulate matter like soot, or black carbon.
