International Maternal Mortality Figures Still Too High

March 27, 2008

The Irish Forum on Global Health has expressed its concern that many countries are not on track to reach the UN target of reducing maternal mortality figures.

The Millennium Development Goal Number Five aims for a reduction by 2015 to three-quarters of the 1990 maternal mortality ratio figures.

"More than 530,000 women and three million newborn babies die each year from complications related to pregnancy and childbirth," said Dr. Diarmuid O'Donovan, Chair of the Irish Forum for Global Health. Dr. O'Donovan was speaking at a recent conference organised by the Forum on the global emergency of maternal mortality.
