World Health Organization Celebrates 60th Birthday

The 193-member World Health Organization turns 60 and World Health Day turns 58 on 7 Apr. The WHO is publishing a book and exhibitions to mark the anniversary. If it heeds researchers Dr. Andrew Oxman and Dr. Atle Fretheim of the Norweigian Knowledge Centre for Health Services and Dr. John Lavis at McMaster University in Hamilton, Ontario, the WHO will be in midst of a soul-searching exercise when the anniversary rolls around.
Taiwanese activists could see the anniversary observances in Geneva as another opportunity to lobby in support of their country's bid for WHO observer status and eventual membership. Taiwan insists, as a sovereign state, that it has a right to become a full WHO member. The country has sought to join the World Health Assembly (WHA), the WHO's decision-making arm, as an observer since 1997, but has seen little progress due to China's objections.
The WHO book, a history of global health over the last 60 years, is based on the organization's Global Health Histories initiative that was launched in 2005. It covers the major health events since WHO was founded in 1948 and the organization's role in them. Reviewing the development of public health during decolonization, the Cold War and globalization, it includes oral histories or some of the world's most important health events as recalled and recorded by retired WHO staff.
