World Malaria Day 2008
April 24, 2008
April 25 is World Malaria Day and also Malaria Awareness Day in the United States. In observance of this day and in recognition of the tremendous opportunities to reduce the burden that malaria imposes on the health of people worldwide, the Malaria Roundtable, a group of malaria advocacy, research and implementing organizations, has written a community statement that recognizes the progress made to combat malaria and calls on the US to continue to provide more investment in malaria initiatives. There are events in the US and around the world this week celebrating what has been accomplished in eradicating Malaria and highlighting what more needs to be done. The Global Health Council, Johns Hopkins University Voices Project and PATH hosted a congressional briefing titled: Toward Eradication - Malaria's Next Frontiers, which highlighted innovations and challenges in some of the field's most pivotal areas, including research and development, strengthening health systems, and tackling high-burden countries.
