Making Childbirth Safer Through Promoting Evidence-Based Care

Thousands of mothers and babies die or become seriously disabled every year through complications of pregnancy and childbirth. These tragic events can, in many instances, be avoided through the application of relatively simple, evidence-based health care interventions. While in poor countries these interventions may not be accessible, there are situations in which available treatments are used inappropriately or not all.

In collaboration with JHPIEGO, Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine, Resource Centre for Randomised Trials and the World Health Organization, the Global Health Council produced this technical report with the aim of highlighting the value of research evidence in making informed decisions about care in pregnancy and childbirth.

We hope that you will find the various case studies summarizing initiatives to implement evidence-based obstetric care in various settings helpful in carrying out your valuable work.
