The Global Health Initiative

President Obama visits La General Hospital in Accra, GhanaOn May 5, 2009, President Barack Obama announced the six-year, $63 billion Global Health Initiative (GHI) which calls for the U.S. to develop an integrated and comprehensive global health strategy that moves away from the fragmented and disease-specific approach of the past. The GHI – which began in Fiscal Year 2009 and will go through Fiscal Year 2014 - is meant to maintain the U.S. government’s commitment to fighting HIV/AIDS and malaria, while scaling up programs in maternal and child health, family planning and neglected tropical diseases.

The GHI responds to the top global health priority of the Global Health Council and our members, as expressed in a letter the Council sent to the Obama Transition Team in November 2008: “The Obama Administration should quickly advance a comprehensive, 5-year global health policy framework. The U.S. commitment to combating disease emergencies and improving health in the developing world has resulted in respected programs, positive outcomes and long-term partnerships that have contributed greatly to strengthening our country’s reputation abroad. Investing in global health programs is widely supported by the American people and benefits U.S. security and diplomatic interests."

This page brings together information and resources on the Global Health Initiative – from the Global Health Council, its members, the Obama Administration, other global health organizations and some of the media reporting on the GHI.
